It’s time for our favorite segment of the week, Walk The Plank Wednesday.. As you know by now, each week we’re going to be sitting down and taking some time to get to know the upcoming artists for Groove Cruise Miami, 2013! We believe that if you know a little bit about who will be melting your face come January, this can only add to the experience as a whole!
Over the past few years, EDX a.k.a. Maurizio Colella has made a name for himself in the international EDM scene, headlining the world’s finest clubs and festivals to crowds in excess of 60,000 – from Miami to Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York, São Paolo, Rio de Janeiro, Seoul, Taipei, all the way to Sydney. The chart topping Switzerland-based DJ/Producer has worked with some of the biggest names in music including Axwell, Benny Benassi, Kelis, Deadmau5, Armand Van Helden, Bob Sinclar, Kool & The Gang, Kaskade, Armin Van Buuren, Steve Angello of the Swedish House Mafia, Dubfire and many others. His remixes have been consistently featured on various DJ charts such as the DMC Buzz, Cool Cuts and Beatport and was even ranked in the TOP 3 of Beatport’s Best Progressive House Artist alongside Deadmau5 and Eric Prydz.
Check out the full excerpt from our interview with Maurizio below:
Have you ever been on a cruise before?
Yes I have and it was a fun experience can’t wait to do it again.
Besides the Groove Cruise, what’s the most memorable party you’ve ever attended?
I haven’t been on the Groove Cruise yet, but I am looking forward to it. As for the most memorable party I don’t think there has been only just one. I have played so many different events, from small clubs to big festivals, and each and every one of them was memorable in their own way.
What comes to mind when you think of a ’Groove Cruise’?
A cruise. Beautiful girls partying in sailor outfits. Everyone dancing. Bikinis. Cocktails. Sunshine. Summer.
What’s your ‘Go-To’ track that we’ll find in all of your sets?
There definitely is not one particular track that you will find in all my sets. It really depends on how I am feeling and how the crowd reacts. However right now I am playing my new track “Touched“ that just came out on Toolroom Records as well as testing out some of my new upcoming productions and remixes.
What’s on your rider?
Nothing too fancy like on like some other big name DJ riders we won’t mention haha. Tech wise it’s all about having the Pioneers CDJ 2000 players and a Nexus 900 mixer. Hospitality wise I need Sugar Free RedBull, water, some vodka and champagne especially for my friends.
What are you packing for The Groove Cruise? Any special packing tricks we should be aware of? Anything you NEVER leave home without?
I never leave home without my laptop and my V-Moda headphones. Otherwise I am packing the usual, a few t-shirts, shorts and jeans and a hoodie. I am all about travelling light with only a carry on.
When traveling, what bugs you the most? What’s been your worst travel nightmare so far? Worst airline?
Flight delays at the airport with slow Wi-Fi internet. That’s the worst because it’s I lose a lot of time that way. I just had a travel nightmare during a Summer tour in the USA when me and my tour manager got stuck at SFO airport for a whole day. The fog didn’t let any planes take off and I missed a gig for that. I only have one favorite airline though which is Swiss.
Window or Aisle?
Aisle, It happens sometimes to have both in one.
Where’s your favorite place to travel in the world? Favorite hotel you’ve stayed in?
I love going to Italy, enjoying a good espresso and some really good food. But everywhere I go has its ups and downs. Honestly nowhere was ever REALLY bad. Hotels, I love the SLS in L.A., The Setai in South Beach, and my absolute favorite relaxing spot is the Mardavall St. Regis in Palma, Spain. Btw. I am writting this interview at my breakfast at the Setai ;).
What do you do when stuck on a plane all day? Any go-to movies?
Sometimes I produce, but most of the time I enjoy listening to music and mostly sleeping. It’s the only time where I actually have my phone off and I can only do offline work on my laptop.
What artist would you LOVE to collaborate with in the near future? Why?
I would definitely love to collaborate with Calvin Harris, he is super talented on every level, and also with Example. I really love his voice. To be honest there are so many talented people out there that I would love to work with.
If you weren’t a DJ, what would you be doing RIGHT NOW?
I would be running my record labels and work in this industry as a manager probably. I love where I am at this moment, and I am thankful for it. Or should I better say I would be a pilot.
What’s something weird that most of your fans probably don’t know about you? Any pet peeves or superstitions?
Well…I take one shot of vodka before going on stage, but probably most of the fans who are close to the booth knew that already.
If you produced a track with a nautical theme, what would you call it and why?
I don’t know “Sail Away“ maybe, even though it’s cheesy. I like the idea of being in contact with nature and get some time off the daily stress I have from all the touring and work.
